Maintenance: It has long been known that one of the best ways to fix problems in the complex systems is to prevent them before they happen. The general idea of preventive maintenance is to do what you can to make a PC last longer and give as little trouble as possible. The goals of preventive maintenance are to reduce the likelihood that the events that cause PC failures will occur and to lessen the damage if and when they do occur. Breakdowns never occur at convenient times. The time to prepare for a disaster is before it occurs. If no preparation has been made, when the inevitable disaster does occur, the damage will most likely be greater than if plans had been made and followed. Consider the hard drive on your PC at this moment. Suppose it suddenly stopped working and all information on the drive was lost. What would be the impact? Are you prepared for this event? Of course, HMR Consulting can't guarantee that this unfortunate event won't happen but we can try to make it as painless as possible. By planning for a few minutes of non-productive activities, hours of repair and recovery work can be avoided. One solution is redundant hardware, which can be expensive. Like maintenance done on a car, money spent wisely now can usually prevent costly problems later. We recommends an "inside the case" maintenance on a yearly basis (depending on environment) and can provide you with guidelines for developing a PC preventive maintenance plan including steps that you can preform yourself at given intervals.

A good maintenance program should never forget the importance of virus and disaster recovery. There is much you can do to protect your computer against viruses and other infestations. This of course includes virus scan software, but this alone is not enough. In addition, just having a backup usually is not enough. Are you confident that you will be able to have a successful restore if needed? Have you tried "cure all" utility programs and found they caused more problems than they solved? We can provide processes to ensure these "solutions" don't become further "problems."

The oldest form of computer network is commonly referred to as the Sneakernet, an official sounding name for a very unofficial way of doing business. In this popular networking arrangement, a user would copy information to a floppy disk, put on a good pair of his/her favorite sneakers, and run (literally) the file over to another machine or user. Not a very efficient method of sharing information by today's standard, but it got the job done. For some purposes, it may still be the best way to get information from one place to another. Through wonderful for encouraging interoffice interaction, Sneakernet, poses a few serious disadvantages. Losing data is a big risk with this system because if you misplace or accidentally reformat the data disk, you lose the information. Making sure that everyone who's working a document or spreadsheet is working with the same information is also cumbersome:

• What happens if you have a copy of the orginal disk and someone makes changes to the orginal without telling you?
• What happens if more than one person is working on a document and you need to incorporate everyone's changes into one copy?
• How do you keep people from leaving the building with disks full of sensitive information?

Obviously, if you want data integrity, security, and the best use of the creativity of all the people working on a document (and who doesn't). Sneakernet is not the way to go. What you need instead is some way of tying your network together other than having to rely on the trustworthiness and good will of your coworkers. What you need is a LAN (Local Area Network).

Strictly speaking a LAN is a group of computers that are connected within a certain area. With a LAN, you can do all the following:

• Perform file-management tasks - Share files and Transfer files
• Share applications
• Share peripheral devices - Printers, Scanners, Fax modems, etc.
• Interact with other users on the network - Schedule group meetings, Send and receive eMail, Hold electronic meetings, etc.

This can all be done at affordable levels and can be implemented in stages if needed.
